Evans, a four-time Olympic swimming champion, and Louganis, considered one of the best divers in history having also won four Olympic golds, will have their pictures depicted on the boxes, due to arrive in stores in the United States next month.

Edwin Moses, Olympic gold medallist in the 400 metres hurdles at Montreal 1976 and on home soil at Los Angeles 1984, has also been chosen for the honour.

Wheaties, established in 1922, began putting athletes on their boxes as early as 1934 to go alongside their “Breakfast of Champions” slogan.

Initially, they appeared on the side or the back of the box until the company made the decision to move them to the front in 1958.

“I think getting the honour now actually means more,” Evans said.

“I think when you’re competing and you’re young, you kind of just take it for granted that of course if you win a gold medal you might have the incredible honour of being on a Wheaties box.

“To even be listed with the incredible athletes that have been on the Wheaties box, and to be a part of this great legacy.

“I think many people hope and expect to see their favourite athlete on a Wheaties box.

“It’s a wonderful reward for all of our hard work.

“I’ve been very anxious to tell everybody.

“I think people will be very excited.”

Louganis, winner of gold medals at Los Angeles 1984 and Seoul 1988, also revelled in the achievement and says he is “humbled” to have been given an honour athletes crave.

“It’s so iconic, everybody looks at the Wheaties box and it’s such an honour," he said.

“I can’t wait to see Janet’s and Edwin’s boxes too.

“I’m excited for them as much as myself.

“What great company to be in.

“Edwin’s always been a hero to me.

“It’s such an honour to be in this group.”
