World rings champion Eleftherios Petrounias of Greece continued his domination of the discipline by clinching gold at the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) World Cup at the Aspire Dome in Doha today.

Petrounias, who also won the rings title at the inaugural European Games in Baku last June before sealing the world crown in Glasgow in October, produced a superb routine, handsomely rewarded by the judges with a score of 15.875 points.

The reigning European champion finished ahead of Armenian pair Vahagn Davtyan, who registered 15.800 points for silver, and Artur Tovmasyan, who scored 15.775 to take home bronze.

On a packed day of action where FIG World Cup titles were won in five artistic events, European all-around champion Giulia Steingruber secured the women’s vault crown with a total of 14.712.

The Swiss, a two-time European Championships vault gold medallist and who topped the podium on the apparatus at Baku 2015, scored comfortably higher than Teja Belak of Slovenia as she was given 14.337 points.

Belak edged team-mate Tjasa Kysselef for silver as her fellow Slovenian received 14.087 points  to claim the final spot in the top three.

World Championships pommel horse bronze medallist Harutyun Merdinyan, a silver medallist in the discipline at the 2015 European Championships in Montpellier, showed why it is his preferred apparatus with a total of 15.675 points.

His score was .375 points higher than nearest challenger Robert Seligman of Croatia, whose tally was enough for silver.

Oleg Stepko, who used to compete for Ukraine but now represents Azerbaijan, sealed the bronze medal as his routine yielded 15.000.

The 22-year-old was third in the parallel bars event at last year’s Artistic Gymnastics World Championships and claimed double gold at the 2010 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Singapore.

Elsewhere, Brazil’s Diego Hypolito, world champion in 2005 and 2007, took the men’s floor honours by virtue of a score of 15.175 points.

Rok Klavora added to the Slovenian haul as he beat Britain’s Sam Oldham for silver.

Sweden’s Jonna Adlerteg earned a rare gold medal by reigning supreme in the women’s uneven bars, one of the trickiest disciplines in the sport, on a score of 14.925 points.

Rebeca Andrade of Brazil took home the silver medal, finishing with 14.250 points, while Portugal’s Filipa Martins’ 13.625 saw her clinch the final spot on the podium.

The World Cup event in Doha is due to continue tomorrow with another five apparatus finals.
