Reigning under 61kg kumite world champion Giana Lotfy led a successful opening day of the World Karate Federation (WKF) Karate1 Premier League for the host counrtry Egypt at Sharm El Sheikh.

Lotfy triumphed at the 2015 edition of the competition and successfully defended her title, overcoming Syria’s Mouna Shheber in the gold medal contest.

Randa Mahmoud and Iman Mohamed secured bronze medals to ensure three home karatekas appeared on the podium.

The home crowd celebrated guaranteed success in the under 55kg competition with Aya Shaaban and Mennatallah Ibrahim advancing to the final.

Ultimately, Aya claimed the division’s title.

Her compatriot Aya Zeinhom and Ukraine’s Terluyga Anzhelika clinched the bronze medals.

Areeg Rashed made it a hat-trick of golds for the hosts in women’s events as she defeated Turkey’s Serap Ozcelik in the under 50kg competition.

Further success came in the men’s competitions as Abdel Rahman Omar and Ibrahim Abdalla ensured Egypt would end the day with five titles, triumphing in the under 75 and 84kg classes.

Morocco’s Achraf Ouchen halted the Egyptian charge, defeating Ahmed Elasfar in the men’s over 84kg competition, with the bronze medals claimed by Tunisia’s Marouane Ezzar Ahmed and South Africa’s Morgan Moss.

Jordan’s Bashar Al-najjar overcame Morocco’s Abdelilah Boujdi in the under 67kg final.

Saudi Arabia’s Almalki Abdulhadi earned the lightweight under 60kg title, beating Spain’s Gomez Garcia Matias.

Spain put their disappointment in the kumite competitions behind them and celebrated Francisco Jose Salazar Jover winning the men’s kata crown. 

The women’s title was earned by the United Arab Emirates’ Sandra Sanchez Jaime with a win over Morocco’s Agalmam Sanae.
