Hosts Brazil saw three of their women’s teams advance through qualifying at the Maceió Open, ensuring they will be represented by seven pairs in the main draw of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) Beach World Tour event.

Maria Antonelli and Liliane Maestrini were the top seeds among the 16 pairings vying for qualification spots but were provided with stern test by the United States’ Irene Hester and Caitlin Ledoux.

The American duo claimed the opening set 21-19 to raise the possibility of a shock result, however, their opponents claimed second 21-11 to force a decider.

With the momentum behind them, the Brazilians won the final set of the contest 15-6.

Eduarda Lisboa and Elize Maia secured the second Brazilian victory of the day, brushing aside Costa Rica’s Karen Cope Charles and Nathalia Alfaro 21-15, 21-18.

A hat-trick of Brazilian wins was sealed by Rachel Nunes and Angela Lavalle as they defeated Norway’s Janne Kongshavn and Vilde Solvoll 21-17, 21-12.

One of the closest fought ties in the men’s qualifying saw the experienced Brazilian duo of Harley Marques and Ricardo Santos clash against Turkey’s Hasan Mermer and Sefa Urlu.

The home favourites claimed the first set 21-13 only to allow their opponents back into the tie, losing the second 21-18.

Marques and Santos held their nerve to overcome their opponents by winning the decider 18-16, despite facing two match points,

“That match was not easy after the first set,” said Marques.

“The Turks were very nervous in the first set as I think our experience and longevity on the tour got to them initially, after the first set, they played extremely well.

“We were able to capitalise on their mistakes to get back into the match.”

Austria celebrated having two pairings advance to the draw, with Christoph Dressler and Thomas Kunert underlining their top seeded in the qualifying sector by overcoming Venezuela’s Igor Hernandez and Leon Colina.

The duo breezed through their contest in 45 minutes, recording a 21-16, 22-20 win.

Their compatriots Martin Ermacora and Moritz Pristauz-Telsnigg surprisingly triumphed 12-21, 21-19, 15-10 against second seeds Nico Beeler and Alexei Strasser from Switzerland.

Competition is due to take place until Sunday (February 28).
