Hosts Hungary breezed to a 7-1 victory against Estonia as the latest phase of ice hockey qualifying for the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics continued in Budapest today.

Fresh from a 4-0 win against Lithuania in their opening Group H match, Hungary continued their fine form at the László Papp Sports Arena as István Sofron beat Estonia goalkeeper Villem-Henrik Koitmaa on a second rebound with less than two minutes on the clock.

The visitors had few chances to score a goal throughout the contest and just after missing out on their first man advantage, Vilmos Galló led a breakaway to make it 2-0 shortly after the 15 minute mark.

Hungary converted their first power play in the middle frame with Sofron scoring after a drop pass from Daniel Koger.

With a similar play on the other side, Robert Rooba, assisted by Andrei Makrov, brought Estonia onto the scoreboard.

The goal did not change the direction of the game, though, as Frank Banham and Peter Vincze extended the lead to 5-1 early in the third period.

Vincze added another goal on a power play with just over three-and-a-half minutes remaining and after contributing two assists, Andrew Sarauer scored after a rebound to complete the win.

Hungary now face a winner-takes-all match against Poland, who earlier thrashed Lithuania 9-1 to also make it two wins out of two.

Grzegorz Pasiut opened the scoring for Poland on a rebound just after the 15 minute mark, and the lead was doubled two minutes later when Aron Chmielewski struck.

After 35 seconds of the second period, Lithuania were outskated as Krzysztof Zapala netted the puck for a 3-0 advantage and it wasn’t long before Maciej Urbanowicz got in on the act too.

Krystian Dziubiński converted for the fifth with the Poles back on power play before Tomas Malasinksi added another with just over two-and-a-half minutes left in the period.

There was still time for Dziubiński to inflict further damage 18 seconds before the end of the middle frame with another power-play marker.

The Lithuanians changed goalkeepers for the last period as Mantas Armalis made way for Artur Pavliukov, who was beaten by Zapala after just 33 seconds.

Mateusz Bepierszcz completed Poland’s scoring before Daniel Bogdziul snatched a consolation goal for Lithuania and denied Przemyslaw Odrobny a shutout.

Prior to Poland’s showdown with Hungary on Sunday (February 14), Estonia are due to play Lithuania in a battle for third place.

Two other four-team tournaments are currently taking place in other parts of the world with action in Group G and Group J due to continue tomorrow.

Group G in Cortina d'Ampezzo sees Great Britain go up against Serbia and hosts Italy meet The Netherlands.

Japan, the home nation in Group J, play Romania in Sapporo after Ukraine’s clash with Croatia.

All 12 teams involved are two steps away from the Olympics - with the winners of all three round-robins earning a spot in one of three final qualifying groups for Pyeongchang 2018.

The three winners of those events will progress to the Games in South Korea - joining the hosts and already qualified nations Finland, Sweden, Canada, Russia, the United States, Czech Republic, Switzerland and Slovakia.
