The International Ski Federation (FIS) have collaborated with British snow artist Simon Beck for an upcoming project due to be revealed on World Snow Day on January 17.

Beck, who began creating snow art back in 2004, wears snowshoes and a compass in order to produce his work with his orienteering skills allowing him to know exactly how many steps are required to complete parts of his design.

He is believed to walk a distance of over 25 miles in his snowshoes and take around 12 hours to complete each work of art, which has seen him gain more than 280,000 fans on Facebook.

For the fifth edition of World Snow Day, Beck has worked alongside the FIS to celebrate the event by creating a special project on Glacier 3000 in Switzerland.

In preparation for the launch, the FIS has released a teaser video for fans to watch and draw further interest towards World Snow Day, which can be watched here

The aim of the annual event is to get as many children and families as possible outside to explore, enjoy and experience snow sports.

World Snow Day is part of the FIS "Bring Children to the Snow" programme, which has the aim to increase participation in snow sports among the next generation.

A total of 41 countries are due to stage events on the day and the FIS will hope to see a further increase in the number of participants from the 2015 edition of the day, where around 600,000 people are believed to have taken to the snow to take part in activities.

China, whose capital Beijing was announced as hosts of the 2022 Winter Olympic Games last year, have announced an increase from 15 to 20 events due to take place across the country to celebrate World Snow Day.

Existing events will also expand the number of activities on offer, with free lift passes, equipment rental and lessons for children, on snow games, live music, skiing and snowboarding demonstrations with professional athletes.
