Three-times Paralympic gold medallist Stephen Miller has been made an Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) and British Paralympic Association (BPA) board member Annamarie Phelps has been made a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the New Year’s Honours List.

Miller won the men’s club throw event at three successive Paralympic Games from Atlanta 1996 to Athens 2004 and also earned silver at Beijing 2008.

The 35-year-old, who captained the men’s athletics squad at London 2012, is now aiming to represent Britain at Rio 2016, which would be his sixth Paralympic Games appearance.

He has been awarded his MBE for his services to sport.

“Sport has given me so much, I hope I can justify being given this huge honour by continuing to be the best role model I can be and by helping others to find the joy of sport,” Miller tweeted.

“This means as much for my family and friends and all the people who have supported me over the years #ThankYou.”

Phelps, meanwhile, has been the chair of British Rowing since 2013 and was given the honour for her services to the sport.

She tweeted: "Huge thanks everyone for all the lovely msgs - I'm thrilled &delighted at being incl in #NewYearsHonours alongside so many amazing people."

BPA chairman Tim Reddish paid tribute to Miller and Phelps. 

"On behalf of everyone at the BPA, I would like to send our warmest congratulations to Annamarie and Stephen, who are both tremendous supporters of disability sport,” he said. 

“It is fantastic to see their hard work and dedication over so many years recognised in this way.

“The honours are truly well-deserved and I congratulate them whole-heartedly.”

Ian Mirfin and his partner Janice Eaglesham were also awarded an MBE in recognition of their services to disability sport.

Eaglesham, the chair of Scottish Disability Sport, has been involved in athletics for 37 years and was a guide runner before joining forces with Mirfin to establish Red Star Athletics Club in 1990.

Mirfin coached Sammi Kinghorn to the bronze medal in the T53 200 metres event at the 2015 International Paralympic Committee Athletics World Championships in Doha.
