Germany’s Eric Frenzel came out on top after a thrilling contest at the International Ski Federation (FIS) Nordic Combined World Cup in Ramsau am Dachstein today.

Frenzel, the reigning Olympic champion in the 10 kilometre normal hill event, clocked a time of 21min 56.5sec in the second Individual Gundersen event to finish 10.2 seconds faster than nearest challenger Jarl Magnus Riiber of Norway.

Third place in Austria went to Frenzel’s compatriot Manuel Faisst, a further 0.1 seconds off the pace.

Riiber continued to reign supreme on the jumping hill, registering 96 metres from one gate lower than the rest of the field, by far the longest jump of the day.

Fellow Norwegian Haavard Klemetsen and Czech Tomas Portyk underlined their jumping credentials with matching performances of 93.5m, giving them 127.2 and 126.9 points and ranks two and three respectively.

Yesterday’s winner Magnus Hovdal Moan of Norway did not have a good jump, landing at 84.5m to give him more than two minutes to make up, while Frenzel had a great starting position, ranking sixth with a time disadvantage of exactly one minute.

After a jump of 88.5m, world champion Bernhard Gruber of Austria managed to get a clear landing but tripped just a few metres before the fall line.

With a total of 95.4 points, he found himself in 48th place and had no chance of a good result with a deficit of 2:38.

Riiber defended his 39-second advantage until the beginning of the third lap when a group formed consisting of five athletes -Frenzel, Riiber, Faisst, Portyk and Klemetsen.

Frenzel ultimately had too much left in the tank and stormed towards his 24th World Cup victory with Faisst and Riiber completing the podium.

Norway's Magnus Krog leads the World Cup standings, with 257 points ahead of Germany's Fabian Riessle on 249.

Japan's Akito Watabe is in third place with a tally of 194, with Frenzel now fourth on 191.

The next World Cup event is due to take place in Klingenthal in Germany on January 2 and 3.
