Four-time world champion Choi Min-jeong set the ball rolling for the Koreans by winning the women's 1500 metres in the Chinese city, relegating home skater Tao Jiaying into second with a time of 2 min 33.187 sec.

Tao clocked 2:33.226 while third place went to Great Britain's Charlotte Gilmartin who was timed at 2:33.411.

Meanwhile, further Korean success came in the men's 1000m with Kwak Yoon-Gy, who has won six World Championship gold medals, prevailing in 1:27.682.

Canada's Charle Cournoyer had to settle for second spot as he finished in 1:27.860 while Russian Semen Elistratov, the current World Cup leader, was third in 1:27.934.

In the women's 1000m final, Canada's Valerie Maltais took the honours with a winning time of 1:35.546, ahead of Suzanne Schulting of Germany who skated over the line way back with a time of 1:47.050.

The German, as well as Korean Shim Suk Hee and China's Qu Chunyu, were involved in a crash which saw the latter two skaters disqualified from the four-woman race.

Triple Olympic champion Charles Hamelin of Canada was the top performer in the men's 1500m, with his time of 2:12.624 enough to beat World Cup leader Sjinkie Knegt of the Netherlands, who clocked 2:12.701, into second spot.

Third place went to South Korean Park Se Yeong who was timed at 2:12.767.

The World Cup is set to continue in Shanghai tomorrow, with six more finals scheduled.
