China silenced the home crowd by clinching a shock victory over hosts Argentina at the International Hockey Federation (FIH) World League Finals in Rosario.

The Argentinians, still recovering from a disappointing defeat to Australia, started the brighter but were unable to assert any dominance as their energetic opponents settled into a stride.

The Chinese defended deep before launching lightening-fast counter-attacks, and it was this tactic which led to the opening goal when a consequent penalty corner was swept home by Wang Mengyu in the 22nd minute.

Argentina hit back after the break when Noel Barriounuevo converted from a penalty corner.

Any thoughts that this would mark the turning point were quickly dispelled, however.

First, Zhang Xiaoxue produced a superb run to set-up Zhao Yudiao to restore the Chinese advabtage before Yu Qian drove home after picking up the ball to the left of the goal just three minutes later.

A stunned Argentina had 15 minutes to respond, but much as they pressured and pushed forward in numbers, they proved unable to capitalise as China hung on for a famous victory.

Olympic bronze medallists Britain, meanwhile, required a win to avoid fourth place in the group after losses against both Argentina and China.

They did exactly that against the world's second ranked side, with the side rejuvenated by the return of star player Crista Cullen.

After defending stoutly to deny Australia a decisive chance, Helen Richardson-Walsh deflected a shot from Alex Danson to score her second goal of the tournament in the 26th minute.

After surviving an intense period of pressure before half-time, Britain were the stronger side after the break and had chances to extend their advantage.

All four sides progress to the quarter-finals, but Argentina are now likely to face world and Olympic champion The Netherlands for a place in the last four.
