Thailand bagged another two gold medals to extend their tally to 95 as the Closing Ceremony brought the curtain down on the 28th Southeast Asian Games in Singapore.

Busanan Ongbumrungpan sealed the women’s badminton singles gold thanks to a 21-17, 21-12 win over Hanna Ramadini of Indonesia, which saw her banish the demons of her defeat in the final two years ago.

“I am very happy right now because I was runner-up last time around; this time I tried to get the gold medal and it is now mine,” she said.

Thailand’s other gold came in the volleyball as their men’s team proved too strong for Vietnam, cruising to a hard-fought three set 25-20, 25-19, 25-23.

Malaysia were also at the double on the final day of the event as, in the badminton, Chong Wei Feng ousted compatriot Mohamad Arif Abdul Latif with a commanding 21-8, 21-9 success which gave their nation their first men’s singles gold for 14 years.

The result gave Chong his first-ever triumph at this level and once he took a 9-0 lead in the opening game, he never looked like relinquishing his grip on the crown.

It marked a positive change for the Malaysian’s career, which stalled after he was axed from the World Championship squad in favour of Lee Chong Wei, who has recently served an eight-month ban for doping.

Malaysia were also guaranteed gold in the women’s doubles as Amelia Alicia Anscelly and Soong Fie Cho claimed a surprise 21-18, 21-13 win over compatriots Vivian Hoo Kah Mun and Khe Wei Woon.

Singapore ended their record-breaking Southeast Asian Games campaign on a high with their 84th gold medal by virtue of a 15-10 win over Indonesia in the men’s water polo final.

Vietnam were the next best nation on the overall medals table with 73, while Malaysia, due stage the 2017 event, were fourth overall on 62.

The Closing Ceremony was a thrilling spectacle which brought the Games to an enthralling end, while the sportsmanship of the athletes was also praised by Southeast Asian Games Federation President Tan Chuan-Jin.

“These Games will be a memorable one for many of us for years to come,” he added.

“It has been made possible by all the countries from our region.”
