The event is expected to attract around 1,000 athletes with an intellectual impairment and it will be the first time the Games has gone to Oceania.

The 2019 edition will also serve as an opportunity for athletes to earn qualification for the all-important 2020 Paralympic Games in the Japanese capital of Tokyo.

The Global Games are the biggest on the Inas calendar and the governing body’s President Amaury Russo is hoping they can create a substantial legacy for the region.

“Brisbane Global Games 2019 aligns totally with the Inas global vision that athletes with an intellectual disability across the world have the opportunity to achieve excellence in sport and high-level competition,” he said.

“The package planned by the local Organising Committee provides a great opportunity to create a long-term legacy by delivering an event that will have a positive social impact and reinforce the benefits of inclusive sport.”

The event in Brisbane will be the fifth Global Games in history, with the last coming in 2011, which was hosted by Liguria, Italy.

The 2015 edition is scheduled for Quito, Ecuador, beginning on September 20.

Brisbane 2019 is set to be organised by AUSRAPID, who are responsible for organising and delivering sporting achievement to those in Australia who have an integration disability.

“The Brisbane Global Games 2019 vision is to deliver a uniquely memorable and exciting celebration of sport and culture which focuses on ability,” AUSRAPID chief executive Robyn Smith said.

“The event will create an atmosphere that inspires achievement, harmony and a sense of unity consistent with the Games vision.”
