Dinh took top honours with a score of 86.150 across six apparatus, with compatriot Pham Phuoc Hung finishing runner-up and home favourite Gabriel Gan the bronze medallist.

Meanwhile, Phan posted a winning total of 53.650 over four apparatus to fend off the challenge of Malaysia’s Farah Ann Abdul Hadi and Singapore’s Nadine Nathan, who came second and third respectively.

It was the sixth SEA Games gold of her career and second in the all-around category.

She won her first as a 15-year-old on the vault in 2007, but had to wait four years before her next appearance, when gymnastics returned to the sports programme after being omitted in 2009.

Phan, who has twice been named Vietnam's athlete of the year, has set her sights on a big medal haul this year.

Despite Vietnam finishing fourth in the team event, she still has four individual apparatus events to come and is among the favourites in all of them.

At last year’s Asian Games, she won a silver medal in the balance beam and a bronze in the vault. 

Earlier this year, she secured gold in the beam and silver in the vault at the World Challenge Cup in Doha.

Meanwhile, Singaporean swimmer Joseph Schooling claimed another two gold medals as he continues his bid win all nine events he is competing in.

The 19-year-old followed up his two successes yesterday by winning the 50 metres freestyle and 200m butterfly.

Schooling has broken the SEA Games record in each of the races he has contested thus far, and got under the 'A' qualifying time for next year's Rio Olympic Games in three different events - 100m freestyle, 200m freestyle and 200m butterfly.

He narrowly fell short of the 'A' qualifying time for the 50m freestyle, but managed to break Singapore's longest-standing national record, which was set 33 years ago.

Hosts Singapore currently top the SEA Games medal standings, followed by Vietnam and Thailand.

Both Singapore and Malaysia, the country from which the hosts gained independence 50 years ago, observed a day of mourning today for the 16 victims of Friday's (June 5) Mt Kinabalu earthquake in Borneo.

Flags were flown at half-mast, while a minute's silence was observed at every SEA Games venue.
