Baku 2015 have staged a BMX sport test event at the newly constructed BMX Velopark as the Azerbaijani capital continues its preparations for the inaugural European Games in June.

Having held the final Baku Prepares test event, in boxing and wrestling, the BMX test event is one of several such competitions Baku 2015 are holding to ensure competition runs smoothly during the Games.

Run in collaboration with the Azerbaijan National Cycling Federation, who provided logistical and transport support, the test allowed Baku 2015 to prepare for action at the Games, which will see 32 men and 16 women compete on the outdoor track at the BMX Velopark.

The event also featured the participation of Baku 2015 Official Supporter Red Bull and Pierce O’Callaghan, Baku 2015 Director of Sport, believes it was a useful exercise with the Games nearly a month away.

“Unlike the Olympic Games, where a large number of full-scale test events are obligatory, we have the flexibility to test our readiness through a series of smaller sport tests, complementing the six major test events we have already held,” he said.

“This has allowed us to focus our attention on the aspects of competitions that we felt need testing on a sport-by-sport basis, and to do so in the most resource-effective manner.

“This is the beauty of being the first ever European Games - as organisers, we are free to innovate as we see fit.

“I believe we have found the right balance for our preparations, and have developed a sustainable model for future host cities.”

The BMX Velopark, located close to the city centre, is expected to host 1,000 spectators during the Games, with competition in the two medal events due to last for three days from June 26 to 28.

In addition to the medals the two medal events, vital Rio 2016 ranking points are also set to be on offer in the BMX competitions.

Following the conclusion of the Games the BMX Velopark will be utilised by the Azerbaijan National Cycling Federation.
