London 2012 Olympic champions David Svoboda and Laura Asadauskaitė are among the athletes to have qualified for the final of the International Modern Pentathlon Union World Cup 3 finals in Rome.

Svoboda of the Czech Republic, a World and European Championship gold medallist, guaranteed his place in the final following a combined event involving 100 athletes.

He will be joined by the likes of Hungarian London 2012 bronze medallist Ádám Marosi and World Cup 2 winner Ruslan Nakonechnyi of Latvia in the battle for podium places on Saturday (April 11).

The final will also feature home talent in the form of Pierpaolo Petroni, Fabio Poddighe and Ricardo de Luca after they made it past the qualifying round consisting of fencing, swimming and  the combined event of running and shooting.

Meanwhile, Lithuanian world and European gold medallist Asadauskaitė will feature in a 36-athlete strong women’s final, where she will be aiming for a repeat of her podium topping performance at last month’s World Cup in Egypt’s capital Cairo.

Olympic bronze medallist Yane Marques of Brazil also made it through as did five home athletes, namely Alice Sotero, Lavinia Bonessio, Laura Tocchi, Aurora Tognetti and Camilla Lontano.

British reigning world champion Samantha Murray was absent in Rome following her withdrawal to prepare for the next World Cup in Budapest, while world number one ranked Qian Chen of China shocked by not securing a place in the final, which takes place tomorrow.

Her compatriot and world bronze medallist Wanxia Liang did, however, make the cut.
