Jane Fernandez has been appointed as general manager, sports, by the Australian Olympic Committee ©FFAJane Fernandez, tournament director of the 2015 Asian Cup, has been appointed by the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) as the new general manager of sport, it was announced today.


Fernandez will the AOC officially on May 4 having spent nearly 10 years working in football.

Before taking up her role with the Local Organising Committee of the Asian Cup, which took place in cities across Australia in January and was hailed as the most successful in the tournament's history, she worked for Football Federation Australia (FFA).

Her responsibilities there included being the senior manager for events and operations, which being closely involved in Australia's unsuccessful bid to host the 2018 FIFA World Cup. 

Before joining FFA, she was events manager at Telsra Stadium, the former Olympic Stadium in Sydney. 

Fernandez's new position marks a return to the Olympic environment as in the run-up to Sydney 2000 she worked Olympic Coordination Authority.

"Jane was the tournament director at the successful AFC Asian Cup," said Fiona de Jong, the AOC secretary general.

"She was a senior project manager at the Football Federation Australia and has worked with Local Organising Committees, multiple major international events in multiple countries including Sydney 2000."

In her new role, Fernandez will be responsible for managing the key aspects of planning and implementing of sending Australian Olympic teams to Summer, Winter and Youth Olympic Games.

Reporting directly to de Jong, she will become the primary contact person for all National Federations and play a key liaison role with external stakeholders, including the Australian Institute of Sport, Australian Anti-Doping Authority and AOC Medical Commission.

Primary responsibilities for the role include managing the support services, operations, administration and medical aspects of Australian Olympic teams, with the selection of athletes and officials, accreditation, uniforms, accommodation allocations in the Olympic Village and other operational elements to ensure athletes enjoy a high performance environment in their Olympic campaign.
