The court described the sanctions placed on Suárez "generally proportionate to the offence committed".

But it "considered that the stadium ban and the ban from 'any football-related activity' were excessive...and would still have an impact on his activity after the end of the suspension".

The appeal hearing was heard at the court in Lausanne last Friday (August 8), with the ruling announced today.

Suárez gave a statement during the hearing to arbitrators Bernhard Welten, Professor Luigi Fumagalli and Dr Marco Balmelli.

There was widespread condemnation after Suárez was caught on camera apparently biting the shoulder of Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini during a group stage clash in June between the two countries.

FIFA threw him out of the tournament, with Uruguay falling at the last-16 hurdle, losing 2-0 to Colombia.

The former Liverpool player, who signed for Barcelona shortly after the World Cup, will also see out his nine-match international ban.

But he can train and attend matches, as well as undertake promotional activities.

The full ruling will be published at a later date by the CAS.

Last year, Suárez was banned for 10 games for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic, while in 2010, he was handed a seven-game ban for biting PSV Eindhoven's Otman Bakkal on the shoulder while playing for Ajax.
