The Netherlands secured their fourth win in Toronto with an impressive performance against defending champions the United States ©Wheelchair Basketball CanadaGermany and The Netherlands emerged as the victors from their respective clashes with Canada and the United States to maintain their 100 per cent start and top their groups at the Women's Wheelchair Basketball World Championships at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto.

There were also important wins for France, Australia and Great Britain while Japan registered their first victory of the tournament on the fourth day of action.

Paralympic champions Germany and hosts Canada played out the most anticipated match of the day and were among four sides boasting three-wins-from-three so far.

Both teams knew that a win would guarantee their place in the quarter-finals and it was the Germans who emerged as the victors on a scoreline of 64-53 to consolidate their place at the top of Group B.

Canada began brightly and after a tight first half they managed to take a 34-31 lead in at the break but Germany emerged in determined mood at the start of the third quarter employing a strong full-court press that forced 13 Canadian turnovers.

Those turnovers were capitalised on as the visitors began racking up the points led by Marina Mohnen and Gesche Schuenemann who finished the match with 29 points and 28 points respectively.

Speaking after the game, German head coach, Holger Glinicki said: "Canada is a good team, and we are too.

"They played well in the first half and so it was very close, but we have to play 40 minutes and after forty I think we are the better team."

Canada drop to tied-second in the group where they are joined by Great Britain, who secured an impressive win over China thanks in no small part to the lethal Helen Freeman who bagged 36 points in a 64-37 victory.

The Chinese were not helped as their most effective player, Yong Qing Fu, was fouled out of the game early in the third quarter.

Japan secured their first win of the tournament as they overcame Brazil 63-52.

That result leaves Brazil rock bottom of the group after four losses, while Japan still have a chance of making the quarter-finals but to do that they will have to overcome Germany and hope that Brazil beat China.

Canada and Great Britain will clash to see who finishes as runners-up to likely group winners Germany.

Meanwhile in Group A, The Netherlands are in pole position as they registered their fourth straight victory against defending champions the United States.

The Dutch looked in fine form from the outset and led by 12 at half-time and continued to press home their superior scoring power in the second half with standout performances coming from Roos Oosterbaan and top-scorer Mariska Beijer with 23 points.

"We watched their [the United States] game and they're a very strong team and we stayed really focused on how to defend and I think that worked out," said Oosterbaan.

London 2012 silver medallists Australia have got their opening day defeat to the United States well and truly out of their system as they racked up their third victory in-a-row against a winless Mexico.

The Australians never looked in trouble throughout leading 37-10 at the break going on to add 23 more points in the second half and seal a quarter-final berth.

They will be joined by France who inflicted yet another heavy defeat on Peru.

France controlled the match from the outset and conceded only two points in a rampant second half showing.

Peru, who are making their debut at international level, will take on Mexico in the final group game tomorrow to decide which team finishes with the wooden spoon.

The other games tomorrow see the United States take on France while Australia and The Netherlands clash in what looks like a tasty encounter as the group stages in Toronto come to a close.
