The Athletics South Africa meeting will be delayed until June 7©ASAA special general meeting to elect the new Board of Athletics South Africa (ASA) has been delayed for two weeks, and will now take place on June 7.

The meeting was scheduled for May 24, but was postponed to avoid a clash with the inauguration ceremony for the South African President, expected to be African National Congress leader Jacob Zuma for a second term in office, taking place on the same day.

It is being billed as a landmark moment for the governing body following a long-running dispute among the ASA leadership.

In June 2013, the ASA Board was suspended by the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) after members ignored sanctions placed on it, before being dissolved in December at an annual general meeting in Johannesburg.

A six month temporary ad-hoc committee was set up to administer the sport until the appointment of the new Board was made.

Daan de Toit, chairman of this ad-hoc committee, explained that the postponement of the meeting has been approved by the International Association of Athletics Federations, and the mandate of the ad hoc committee has duly been extended by two weeks.

The meeting will include elections for the position of ASA President, with the leading candidate being veteran marathon runner Hendrick Ramaala after the 42-year-old former ASA vice-president announced his intention to run last month.

Elections will also take place for vice-president, and for the chairmanship of commissions spanning cross country, road running and track and field, as well as an Athletes' Commission.
