The World Rowing Federation has opened the nomination process for the 2014 Parmigiani Spirit Award ©FISAApril 14 - The International Rowing Federation (FISA) has put out a call for nominations for this year's Parmigiani Spirit Award.

The prize, now in its second year, is for university rowers who have demonstrated the core values of the sport in his or her social, academic and sporting life and used those to inspire success in others, whether it be in education, business, sport or charity.

"Parmigiani and FISA are dedicated to providing young athletes and scholars with the opportunity to cultivate rowing's values and to search for excellence on the water and in the classroom," said Denis Oswald, President of FISA.

The winner of the award will be a current full-time student who rows regularly for a university club.

They will receive a handcrafted Parmigiani Fleurier watch and the rowing club of the winner will be presented with a new, custom-made Filippi racing eight boat, which are used by medal-winning crews throughout the world.

The prizes will be adjusted to conform to national eligibility rules in countries such as the United States, where National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) regulations apply.

The inaugural Parmigiani Spirit Award winner was James Cook, who rows for the University of London Boat Club in Great Britain.

He was recognised for excelling both academically and in sport, as well as dedicating time to coaching, while training for international events and raising funds for the Village Water charity that provides Africans with clean drinking water - in 2011, he rowed 1,000 kilometres down the Zambezi River as part of the Row Zambezi Expedition, which generated more than $40,000 (£24,000/€29,000) in contributions.

Each nomination must be made by two of the nominated rower's team-mates, supported by the rowing club and endorsed by the university, with only one member to be nominated by each club.

University rowing clubs have until June 30 to submit nominations here.
