American superstar Tiger Woods has won the PGA Tour Player of the Year awardSeptember 27 - World number one Tiger Woods has been named the Professional Golfers' Association (PGA) World Tour Player of the Year for the eleventh time, whilst his American compatriot Jordan Spieth was voted Rookie of the Year.

Woods claimed five victories on the Tour this season in his first 11 appearances as he overcame injury problems to return to the number one spot in the world rankings.

The 20-year-old Spieth finished tenth on the overall money list after notching up nine top-ten finishes this year, and also became the youngest player to win on tour 1931 with a win at the John Deere Classic in Illinois this July.

The awards were voted for by Tour players that have competed in at least 12 official money events this year.

"Tiger's five wins came against some of the strongest fields in golf including the Players and two World Golf Championships, while Jordan's rookie season was historic in terms of his accomplishments for a player just 20 years old," said PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem.

"The member vote reflects the respect their peers have for both players."

Woods spoke of his pride at battling back from injury to have a somewhat fruitful season.

"I've had to work my way back from injuries on numerous occasions throughout the years - the last couple of years are no exception to that," he said.

"There were a lot of people saying I could never win again, and two years later I've got eight wins on our tour.

"I'm very proud of where I've come from, from being ranked outside the top 50 to being ranked where I am now, and to have had the success that I've had this year just makes it all the more rewarding."

Youngster Spieth began the season with no PGA Tour status, but his incredible season has been capped by being made a captain's pick for next weeks' President's Cup.

"I don't know if it's a pinch-me moment yet," said Spieth.

"I think my mind is still really on next week."

"I haven't really had time to sit back and think about it.

"But with no status IT was hard to expect or think about something like this happening.

"I have confidence in myself to get the job done.

"Just the way the year ran, the way it happened, I feel very fortunate, very blessed.

"A lot of luck involved."
