European Schoolboy Boxing ChampionshipsApril 26 - Ireland has been awarded this year's European Schoolboy Boxing Championships, they have announced. 


Irish Amateur Boxing Association (IABA) chief executive Don Stewart confirmed that they will host the event, at a venue still to be announced, between July 28 and August 4.

"Ireland's young boxers have a proud record in this tournament over the last decade and the Irish Amateur Boxing Association looks forward to welcoming teams from throughout Europe to Ireland this summer," he said.

Tommy Murphy, President of the IABA, confidently predicted that the 2013 Championships will be an outstanding occasion for European boxing.

"The Irish Amateur Boxing Association is very much looking forward to welcoming our fellow European Associations to Ireland," he said.

"I have no doubt that some of the Olympic and world stars of the future will be competing in Ireland this summer.

"These top tournaments are part of our strategic plan to give our young athletes the experience of competing against the best in Europe and the world."

The 2013 European Schoolboy Championships will be the 11th edition of the tournament since the inaugural event in Rome in 2003.

Franco Falcinelli, President of the European Boxing Confederation, claimed that he was confident that following the success of the IABA hosted 2011 European Youth Championships at the Citywest Hotel in Dublin, that the Ireland will once again organise a successful event.

Ireland's young boxers claimed a record 10 medals, three of which were gold, at the 2012 European Schoolboys Championships in Anapa, Russia, finishing in second place in the medals table behind the host nation.

Oliver McCarthy, James McGivern and Michael Nevin finished on top of their respective podiums at the Black Sea holiday resort.

Ireland's boxers have won medals at every European Schoolboy Championships since the inaugural tournament in 2003.
