Marius Vizer head and shouldersApril 24 - Marius Vizer's candidature to become the new President of SportAccord has received a powerful endorsement from C K Wu, President of the International Boxing Association (AIBA), who has praised him for helping turn round the fortunes of judo.

Vizer, President of the International Judo Federation (IJF), announced last month that he is seeking to replace Hein Verbruggen as head of SportAccord, the umbrella organisation for all Olympic and non-Olympic international sports federations as well as organisers of multi-sports games and sport-related international associations.

"He is very capable, he has made judo become a very important sport and that shows his capabilities," Wu, who is also a member of the International Olympic Committee's Executive Board where he represents the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF), told insidethegames

Vizer is facing opposition for the SportAccord role from Bernard Lapasset, President of the International Rugby Board, who announced last week that he would be standing.

But Vizer's success in helping ensure judo's place on the Olympic programme following a successful London 2012 will help him, predicted Wu.

"Marius is very experienced and his achievements give him some good advantage," he said.

The centrepiece of Vizer's campaign is radical plan for all the sports to hold a united World Championships once every four years.

Vizer's main plan is to launch an event that would see all the sports - Olympic and non-Olympic - once every four years hold their flagship World Championships events in the same country over a period of up to three weeks.

Wu admitted he is intrigued by the proposal and is planning to seek more information from Vizer.

"At this stage it's a concept," said Wu.

"For me, as the President of an International Federation, any new proposal that could make changes to the current existing programme we will pay a lot of attention to to see what the implications would be.

"We need further information and more detailed consideration on how he [Vizer] will run the World Championships.

"If it's a good idea we would certainly support it.

"We welcome any new concept."
