Godric SmithSeptember 17 - Former head of communications for the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) Godric Smith has been appointed as the executive director of Government Communications on an interim basis.

He has been picked to replace Jenny Grey, who has quit the role to join Citigroup.

It is a return to a frontline role in politics for Smith, who was formerly the spokesman for Tony Blair when he was Prime Minister.

The Government announced recently that it plans to spend an estimated £285 million ($463 million/€353 million) on communications during the financial year 2012-2013 as part of a new plan to deliver news and marketing services.

Smith takes on the role having worked on the Olympics over the past six years, first as director of communications for the ODA and then heading up the media team at the Government Olympic Executive (GOE), which was led by by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and had a team of more than 100.

He officially left his Olympic role last Friday (September 14).

"The appointment of Godric Smith as interim executive director of Government communications will enable us to continue delivering these important reforms," said Francis Maude, the Minister for the Cabinet Office.

"As a former Prime Minister's official spokesman, and with his excellent work at the Olympic Delivery Authority and as director of Government communications for London 2012, Godric brings the experience and expertise needed for this important role.

"I look forward to working with him to deliver effective communications that represent value for taxpayers' money."

Smith worked at Downing Street from 1996 to 2006, including as Blair's official spokesman between 2000 and 2004.
