Cathal Miller_1_6_AugustAugust 6 - Cathal Miller has been named as Ireland's flag-bearer for the London 2012 Paralympic Games Opening Ceremony, which will take place here on August 29.

The 43-year-old right-arm amputee from Dublin (pictured top) was selected via a ballot of Irish Paralympic team athletes and will follow in the footsteps of former wheelchair racer Patrice Dockery, the six-time Paralympian, who led out the Irish team in Beijing four years ago (pictured below).

"I am absolutely delighted to be leading the Irish team out at the London Games," said Miller, who will be competing in his second Paralympics having made his debut at Beijing.

"It is a huge honour for me, my family and all my supporters.

"To be chosen by my fellow athletes makes it all the more special as there is a phenomenal amount of talent and experience in this Irish team."

Miller will be aiming for four medals when he competes in the C5 track one-kilometre time trial and 4km individual pursuit in the Velodrome along with the C5 time trial and road race.

He will be one of Ireland's strongest medal contenders after securing bronze in the Sydney leg of the 2011 UCI Road World Cup.

Liam Harbison, Paralympics Ireland chief executive and team Chef de Mission, commented: "I am delighted for Cathal on his selection as the official flag-bearer for the Irish team."
