May 31 - BayWa AG, the energy, agriculture and construction group with strong ties to Bavaria and a global reputation for expertise in sustainability and renewable energies, was today unveiled as the latest sponsor of Munich's bid to host the 2018 Olympics and Paralympics.

Bavaria's Prime Minister Horst Seehofer announced the new deal at a special ceremony.

He said: "I am delighted that BayWa AG, a internationally-renowned company which has maintained its roots in our region, has backed the city's Olympic Bid.

"With BayWa on board, we are even more confident that by 2018, Munich can deliver its ambitious targets: state-of-the-art life-cycle source reduction, lasting reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, innovative water-management and waste avoidance practices will all contribute to our sustainability goals.

"I would like to thank the chairman of the Board, Klaus Josef Lutz, for the impetus that BayWa has given us just before the IOC's (International Olympic Committee) crucial decision on the candidate cities and the beginning of the bid phase."

Willy Bogner, the chief executive of Munich 2018, emphasised the importance of the environment to Munich’s bid.

He said: "BayWa is the right partner to help us achieve our ‘Friendly Games’ vision.

"One of our main objectives is to make the Games eco-friendly.

"The grand scale and beauty of Bavaria are considered a natural environmental treasure in Germany.

"The implementation of innovative projects and the comprehensive sustainability concept for the Games will effectively minimise adverse environmental impacts while leaving an extraordinary environmental Olympic legacy."
