April 2 - Ed Wright (pictured) bagged Britain’s only gold on the final day of the ISAF Sailing World Cup event in Palma, with British sailors picking up a total of five medals from the opening leg of the European regatta today.

Wright’s gold in the Finn class hands him back-to-back wins from the last two legs of the World Cup series, with the final day’s action at this Princess Sofia Trophy also seeing silver go to Chris Draper and Peter Greenhalgh in the 49er class, with bronze for fellow British 49er crew Stevie Morrison and Ben Rhodes, and for Bryony Shaw in the RS:X windsurfing.

Helena Lucas kick-started the British medal tally yesterday with a silver in the 2.4mR Paralympic class.

Today's medal race action got underway after a short postponement waiting for the sea breeze to appear.

Heading into the final 10-boat event in the silver medal position, Wright’s heavyweight Finn fleet was the first to race, and in the light and shifty winds the 32-year-old had to fight hard to retain his position in the overall standings.

Wright made steady progress throughout the regatta, having only broken into the top three positions for the first time yesterday, before his medal race surge handed him gold.

"I was pretty lucky to get the Majorca World Cup win, but two in a row is really great and hopefully I’ll be able to carry it on at the next events in the year," said Wright.

"The whole week has been pretty up and down - it’s been a tricky regatta, and the medal race just as much.

"There were light winds, and usually a left hand track here, but the wind kept flicking to the right."

Fellow British Finn sailors Giles Scott and Andrew Mills also featured in the final medal race, and finished their regatta in seventh and eighth places respectively.

With the 49er title as good as sealed by the French duo of Manu Dyen-Stephane Christidis, the battle for the remaining podium spots was between Britain's Draper-Greenhalgh and Morrison-Rhodes, with the latter having the upper hand going in to the final race.

Draper and Greenhalgh managed to the favoured side of the course at the start, and retained the advantage from then on to finish the medal race in third to claim silver.

Morrison and Rhodes took bronze, with Britain's Dylan Fletcher and Alain Sign ending their regatta in eighth.

"We’re over the moon," said Draper of his and Greenhalgh’s first podium finish together since joining forces just over a year ago.

"We were disappointed at the World Championships - we really felt we could have done a bit better there.

"We went away from there and had a good think about it, and we spent a lot more time working off the water on everything than we did on the water.

"We’ve changed a lot of the way we go about doing things, and basically are just trying to get better as a team.

"We’re a young team together, so we’re really pleased that things are moving forwards."

Shaw capped off the British medal haul with a bronze in the RS:X windsurfing event, finishing behind the four-times Olympic medallist Alessandra Sensini and Spain’s Marina Alabau who took gold and silver respectively.

There was disappointment, however, for Nick Thompson, and Lucy Macgregor, Annie Lush and Ally Martin, who narrowly missed out on the podium spots, finishing in fourth place in the Laser and women’s match racing events.

Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Olympic manager Stephen Park said: "It’s been a tricky week, and a number of sailors have had a tough time of it but came through to do well so that’s encouraging.

"It’s great that Ed Wright managed to gain the gold in the Finn, as he was not doing so well halfway through the regatta, and I’m pleased for Chris Draper and Peter Greenhalgh bounced back to get silver after a couple of instances of gear failure in the week.

"In fact Ed, Chris Draper and Nick Thompson have all had what they would consider to be unfortunate outings, but in terms of the results it worked out reasonably well.

"The number of medal opportunities we have continues to increase but it’s only good if you convert those opportunities and this week we missed out on a couple.

"We’re looking forward to Hyeres and the next round of the World Cup at the end of April."
