March 17 - Coca-Cola today agreed to become the official beverages partner of the Commonwealth Games, which are due to open in New Delhi on October 3.

The announcement of the deal, which was signed to coincide with 200 days to go until the Opening Ceremony, is a major boost for Indian officials who continue to come under fire for their slow pace in getting facilities ready for the Games.

Coca-Cola claimed that they already had several activities lined-up to help promote the Games, the biggest event to be held in India since the 1982 Asian Games and a possible launch-pad for a bid for the 2020 Olympics and Paralympics.

Coca-Cola join Hero Honda and the Central Bank of India as sponsors of the event.

Atul Singh, the President and chief executive of Coca-Cola in India, said: "We are privileged to be associated with the Commonwealth Games. Coca-Cola has always been associated with sports.

"We will continue to look for opportunities to build sports culture in the country."

Coca-Cola is the Olympics' longest sponsor, having been associated with the Games since Amsterdam in 1928.

Singh said: "Coca-Cola has a strong legacy of supporting Olympics.

"Today is an important day for all of us as we are just 200 days away from the Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi."

As part of the agreement the company said its products will exclusively be sold to spectators and served to the athletes, team officials and volunteers during the Games.

Singh said: "The exclusive association with Coca-Cola India encompasses products in the carbonated soft drink, water, juice and juice drink categories helping connect and engage with its customers, dealers and employees in one of the most memorable ways."

Suresh Kalmadi, the chairman of Delhi's organising committee, said: "Today is an important day for all of us as we are just 200 days away from the Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi.

"We are confident about delivering a Games that India will be proud of."
