The 27-year-old claimed National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) claimed that they were interfering with his preparations for the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in October and that they treated him like a "Mr Nobody".

Bindra has been training abroad for the last six months but is growing frustrated that the NRAI keep forcing him to return to India to compete in trial events.

He said: "I'm not saying I don’t want to be accountable.

"I will go to international competitions and my scores there can be monitored."

Bindra was upset that he was forced to return to India in December for a trial that was then postponed.

He has written to the NRAI and India's Sports Ministry asking that he be allowed to prepare in a manner similar to his run-up to the Beijing Olympics in 2008 but had not received a response.

Bindra said: "The present situation has me very upset and does not leave me with much motivation.

"I don’t see any chance of future success if I’m not allowed to prepare in a certain way that has worked for me and is what my professional team and I have planned."

Bindra became the first Indian athlete to win an individual gold medal when he won the 10 metre air rifle event in Beijing in 2008.
 
It was also India's first Olympic gold medal since its men's hockey team won the title at the Moscow Games in 1980

Abhinav's father A.S. Bindra said: "He is annoyed that his point of view is not being taken properly by the national body and he is being treated like a Mr Nobody.

"He needs space to do his training and prepare himself for this year's Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games [in Guangzhou in November]  the way he prepared for the Olympics,"

NRAI senior vice-president Avtar Singh Sethi said: “We are going to ask the Sports Ministry to consider his international competition scores in lieu of trials.

"There will be a meeting in a few days."
