October 1 - Jonathon Charlesworth has been selected to make his hockey debut under his celebrated father, coach Ric Charlesworth (pictured), for the Australian men's team's tour to Malaysia.

Like his dad, Charlesworth is both a midfielder and a qualified medical doctor.

The 24-year-old said: "It's only human nature for people to compare us, but I'm confident that my abilities are enough to have me stand on my own two feet."

Charlesworth's promotion to the Kookaburras comes after five seasons in the national league with Western Australia.

He is one of three debutants named yesterday for the five-Test tour to Malaysia from October 16-26 along with Queensland pair Matt Gohdes and Matthew Swann.

Ric Charlesworth said: "All three players have shown encouraging signs throughout the year and have all earned the right to represent the Kookaburras.

"Obviously as a father, I'm proud of Jonathon.

"But he will be treated no different from any other player in the squad."

A much-capped former Kookaburras captain, Ric Charlesworth coached the Australian women's team to gold medals at the 1996 and 2000 Olympics and took over the men's team following last year's Beijing Games.
