He will oversee all aspects of the boxing competition, including the three weight categories for women introduced by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) earlier this month.

But there still remains uncertainty about the venue with the the International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) resisting attempts by London 2012 to move it from the Olympic Park to Wembley Arena.

Archibald will provide a focal point for the AIBA in relation to competition issues whilst ensuring that the competition is organised in accordance with AIBA regulations, the IOC Charter and the Host City Contract.

The University of Edinburgh gradudate will also be liaising with other London 2012 functional areas to ensure the coordinated delivery of all services such as accreditation, transport, medical, and volunteers.

The boxing competitions in 2012 will involve 286 boxers - 250 men and 36 women - competing for 52 medals in 13 weight categories - 10 men and three women.

Archibald began his career in business working as a consultant at Deloitte where he qualified as a chartered accountant.

He then switched to pursue a career in sport working first at Sport England between 2003 and 2006 before turning his attention to boxing full-time.

He worked as the operations manager of the ABAE before moving to manage the British team that achieved record breaking results in the World Championships in 2007, the EU Championships in 2008 and then last year's Olympics, where the squad achieved its best results since the 1956 Games in Melbourne with three medals, including one gold and two bronze.

Archibald has spent the last 12 months working with the performance team at UK Athletics prior to starting at London 2012.

He said: “I am delighted to be taking up this position and honoured to be part of the world’s greatest sporting event.

"Boxing has a great Olympic pedigree and a rich heritage in London.

"Great Britain’s two most recent Olympic champions James DeGale [in 2008] and Audley Harrison [in 2000] joined Terry Spinks, Chris Finnegan and Harry Mallin as Olympic champions heralding from the capital.

"The city boasts over 70 registered amateur boxing clubs and I am convinced London 2012 will inspire the next generation of champions both in London and across the UK.

"With the IOC including women’s boxing in the 2012 programme, the London Organising Committee is privileged to be hosting the first Olympic Boxing competition in which both sexes will compete since 1904.

"I greatly look forward to working with AIBA and all of the other stakeholders both in the build-up to and during this landmark event."

Ho Kim, the executive director of the AIBA, said: “AIBA is extremely pleased to have someone of Matthew’s calibre appointed in the role of boxing manager for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

"His experience in the world of sport and in particular boxing is invaluable.

"He played an instrumental role in the success of the Great Britain and England squads over the past two years. We are looking forward to a successful Boxing event in London in 2012."

Keith Walters, the chairman of the Amateur Boxing Association of England (ABAE), said: "Matthew’s appointment is an excellent one and well deserved.

"We worked closely with him in the build up to the Beijing Olympic Games last year, and his dedication and experience were invaluable to us.
