AUGUST 5 - FRANKIE FREDERICKS (pictured with Sebastian Coe) has been elected chairman of the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) Athletes Commission, it was announced today.

The Namibian, who won silver in 100 and 200 metres at both the 1992 Games in Barcelona and Atlanta in 1996, replaced Sergey Bubka, the former Ukrainian pole vaulter.

Bubka said: "I've really enjoyed my time leading the Athletes' Commission.

"It is the best job in the IOC, because you have the honour to represent the voice of the athlete.

"I think Frankie will take the Athletes' Commission to the next level.

"He's a perfect fit for the role."

The Commission has an advisory role to the IOC and is composed of active and retired athletes.

The 40-year-old Fredericks became a member of the IOC in 2004 after retiring from competition and he was a member of the Evaluation Commission that visited London when it was bidding for the Olympics in 2005.
