altJUNE 20 - SPORT ENGLAND today announced that Mihir Warty, currently Head of Strategy, Strategic Projects Group at the BBC, has been appointed Director of Policy and Performance at Sport England for the build-up to the 2012 Olympics.

Warty, who was formerly Head of Strategy for BBC Sport joins Sport England on August 7 where he will oversee a Directorate that consists of four key strands; research, policy and improvement, investment and planning, and business planning and programme support.

He succeeds Tim Garfield, Regional Director of Sport England East Midlands, who has acted as interim Director of Policy and Performance for the past six months. Garfield will remain on the executive team for a transitional period before returning to his Nottingham-based role in January.

Warty will be responsible for formulating policy development through communication with relevant Government departments and stakeholders. He will also oversee Sport England’s work on research, investment strategies and performance management, providing support at a national and regional level to improve the performance of the sports sector.

Welcoming the appointment, Stephen Baddeley, interim Chief Executive of Sport England said: “Mihir Warty’s wealth of experience in developing strategy at the BBC will help drive forward Sport England policy and strategy over the coming months as part of our goal to get more people involved in sport and physical activity.

" I have every confidence that he’ll prove a key asset in our ongoing work with government, partners and stakeholders to make the case for sport in the community.”
