Such has been Britain's dominance on the cycling track that it marked only the second time Britain had missed out on an Olympic gold in a medal event in the Velodrome as the 2010 world omnium champion finished behind eventual winner Lasse Hansen (pictured above, centre) of Denmark and silver medallist Bryan Coquard (pictured above, left) of France.

Clancy (pictured above, right) won two of the events and finished second in a third, but ultimately fell short of the title due to two disappointing displays in the bunch races which left him on 30 points, behind the Dane who took victory with 27 points and the Frenchman who was second with 29 points.

"I wasn't expecting a medal [entering the final event]," said the 27-year-old Yorkshireman.

"All those guys on 25 points [three riders were level entering the final event] have all done good kilos in the past.

"I thought it would be fourth place and a bit of disappointment.

"That's why I was so happy to get a medal in the end.

"When I think about the big picture, looking back on this, it will be awesome."

The day also saw Jason Kenny and Victoria Pendleton make serene progress in the men's and women's sprint competitions, where both are favourite to take more gold for Britain at the venue.
