surrey sports_park_03-07-12July 3 - Surrey are welcoming athletes for their final training sessions ahead of London 2012 with 12 international Olympic and Paralympic teams set to use the British county as a base camp in order to put the finishing touches on their preparations for the Games.

The main facility being used is the Surrey Sports Park (pictured above) in Guildford which includes a 50 metre pool, eight outdoor tennis courts and two new floodlit artificial grass pitches.

It also features six glass backed squash courts with two show courts for 160 spectators, a 120 station health and fitness centre and a 12m high climbing centre with a unique bouldering facility.

In addition, there is a 250 seat Starbucks Coffee House, which is the first Starbucks in Europe to be housed within a multi-sports facility.

The Philippines swimming team arrived at the venue last weekend, while several other high profile teams will follow them in using the venue to finalise their London 2012 preparations including the United States triathlon team and the Chinese synchronised swimmers.

Surrey Sports Park chief executive Paul Blanchard admitted he was happy to see the athletes arriving at the facility with the Olympic Games now less than a month away.

"We are delighted to welcome the first international athletes to arrive in Surrey for pre-games training camps," Blanchard told insidethegames.

"For us, London 2012 started back in May with the arrival of the Great Britain women's basketball team but over the next few weeks, we are set to welcome 250 further athletes and delegates from 15 nations and we are all looking forward to working with them to ensure all the athletes are fully prepared for this summer's big event."

Elsewhere in Surrey, around 1,400 Olympic athletes will be staying in student accommodation on campus at the Royal Holloway University in Egham before they move to the Athletes' Village just adjacent to the Olympic Park in Stratford.

During the Olympics, Surrey will see the road cycling race pass through it on the first weekend of competition with the men's race scheduled for July 28 and the women's for July 29.

The men's race could prove a historic one for Britain as Mark Cavendish is one of the big favourites for victory and the 27-year-old Isle of Mann rider could claim the host nation's first gold of London 2012 with a victory.
