Cadbury -_Ireland_2_10_AugApril 11 - Cadbury has announced a sponsorship deal with the Olympic Council of Ireland and Paralympics Ireland – and has unveiled three ambassador athletes for the Games in Catherine Walsh, Paul Hession and Grainne Murphy.

Hession made history two years ago at the European Championships in Barcelona when he became the first Irishman to qualify for the 200 metres final in which he came sixth.

Murphy, a 19-year-old freestyle swimmer, is a potential star in the making having won three gold medals at the European Junior Championships in 2009 followed by a silver medal in the 1,500 metres freestyle at the following year's senior event.

She also won the Irish Times Sportswoman of the Year award in 2010.

Walsh is a five-times Paralympian who will compete in her sixth Games in London this summer and won a pentathlon bronze medal at Sydney in 2000.

Cadbury now becomes the official treat provider to Ireland's Olympic and Paralympic teams in the remaining months before and during London 2012.

The world-renowned confectionery brand, owned by Kraft Foods, is a global sponsor of the London 2012 Olympic Games, and this agreement cements its involvement with this summer's event.

Brian O'Sullivan, managing director of Kraft Foods Ireland, said at the official announcement: "Cadbury, as one of Ireland's best loved brands, is delighted and proud to launch this sponsorship.

"There has never been a more exciting time for a brand to be involved in the Olympic and Paralympic Games, and for a brand like Cadbury to be in a position to bring a little of the Olympic spirit, and joy to our customers, the opportunity was simply too good to miss.

"As a company with a large Irish manufacturing base and heritage here we are fully behind each and every Irish athlete taking part in the Games and immensely proud to play a role in their journey to London 2012."

The company's involvement in Ireland dates back to 1932, and today the company sells €250 million (£210 million/$320 million) worth of products worldwide.

Cadbury will be running a number of initiatives in the coming weeks enhancing Ireland's experience of the Olympic and Paralympics – including the Unwrap Gold initiative, which will give consumers of Dairy Milk bars the chance to win hundreds of 'golden vouchers' to the Games.

The Olympic Torch relay will visit Ireland this summer after the official rules were changed to allow London 2012 a special exemption to make the historic detour.

Pat Hickey, President of the Olympic Council of Ireland, added: "Team Ireland has been fortunate in its preparations for the London Olympics in having Cadbury on board as a major sponsor.

"This famous brand, promoting and supporting our athletes to a very great degree, continues to help build public excitement and team awareness as we get ready to 'go for gold' in four months' time."

Paralympics Ireland chief executive Liam Harbison commented: "We are delighted that Cadbury is partnering with the 2012 Irish Paralympic team towards this summer's 'home' Games.

"Its support is of huge help, not just to Paralympic athletes like Catherine Walsh who are targeting the podium in London, but also in building the greatest ever public support for the team."
