savannah marshall_london_2012_test_event_27-11-11November 27 - CK Wu, President of the International Boxing Association (AIBA), has heaped praise on the London 2012 boxing test event at the famous ExCeL in London's Docklands saying that he has been "extremely pleased" with the organisation of the competition.

GB Boxing dominated the action in the test event and had a triumphant final day as they secured an impressive five gold medals from as many finals.

Liverpool's Natasha Jonas and Hartlepool's Savannah Marshall began the gold rush in the morning session with convincing victories, while the women's success was matched in the afternoon session by the men as England's Martin Ward, Sean McGoldrick from Wales and Scotland's Josh Taylor ensured all three home nations went home with a gold medal.

"The action at the test event has been fantastic and far better than we were expecting," Wu told insidethegames.

"Obviously this is just a test and we will see the real thing next year but I must say that I am extremely pleased with the professionalism and organisation in place already.

"The ExCeL is a fantastic venue and I am sure that the boxing competition at the Olympics will be truly iconic.

"It will also be historic with women taking part for the first time ever and the test event has shown us that we can expect some superb fights from both the men and women."

Lightweight Jonas (pictured right) was the standout performer at the event as she produced a fantastic display of controlled boxing to secure a 16-10 victory over the world number two Cheng Dong of China.

It capped a fantastic week for the fighter who also beat the world number four, Quinitta Underwood (left) from America, and the world number seven, Anastasia Belyakova of Russia, en route to the final.

"It is massive for me to have beaten the world number two today," Jonas said.

"It is always good to get a win, but especially against somebody like Dong Cheng.

"She is just so awkward and tall and she knows how to use that to her advantage.

"It is the biggest victory of my career."

Her win was followed by middleweight Marshall taking gold with a 13-10 victory over Dariga Shakimova of Kazakhstan in a cagey bout but the highly rated prospect was delighted with the result.

"I haven't won gold since March 2010, so I'm really pleased with the way this week has gone," said Marshall.

"I feel I am getting stronger and this will give me confidence for the World Championships next year."

In the afternoon, Repton lightweight Ward (pictured right) showed his class with a 10-5 victory over Eugen Burhard (left) of Germany before bantamweight McGoldrick secured another gold medal to go with that he won at the 2010 Commonwealth Games by beating Worapoj Petchkoom of Thailand 14-10.

Britain's final gold came as Scotland's Taylor claimed a 13-10 win over Anthony Yigit of Sweden, while Fred Evans of Wales took one more a bronze medal for the team in the welterweight category.

Britain would have almost certainly have added another medal to the collection in the form of the reigning European champion Nicola Adams but the 28-year-old flyweight from Leeds pulled out just before the start of the tournament with a minor hand injury.
