emma-hayes_01-08-11August 1 - The race to coach the Great Britain football team at the London 2012 Olympic Games has begun after former Arsenal assistant manager Emma Hayes put herself forward for the post.

Hayes believes her experience with many of the squad could give her a crucial advantage, after she played a part in the Arsenal squad, which swept their opponents aside to win the quadruple in 2007, and also stated her ambition to become England coach at some point in the future.

"I would love to take on the job," Hayes told The Guardian.

"I've not coached at international level, although one day I would like to manage my country.

"I certainly feel I could handle Team GB at the Olympics.

"I know all the England players - in club football I've coached a lot of them or coached against them - and through working in the Women's Professional Soccer league.

"I've got good knowledge of a lot of the players that will be in opposition next year.

"As well as the top Americans who are in the league, there are key players from several of the nations that will be at the Olympics."

Hayes now works in the United States as the technical director of professional women's team New York Flash, and among her squad is the Brazilian Marta, one of women's football's best-known and most talented players.

She has previously coached Chicago Red Stars and Washington Freedom.

England manager Hope Powell could also throw her hat into the ring for the post but has resisted calls for her to rule herself either in or out as yet.

After England's exit on penalties against France in last month's World Cup, when asked about her prospects of taking on the post, Powell said: "I don't know, I need to catch my breath after the World Cup.

"It [the Olympics job] will be open to other managers and right now I'm not focused on that.

"We've got the European Championship qualifiers starting soon and that's my first priority."

Mo Marley, the coach of Everton Ladies and the England under-19 team, could be another in the frame for the role.
