Luke_Campbell_in_black_topJune 10 - Sheffield-based GB Boxing has selected a 15-strong team, including 2008 European gold medallist Luke Campbell (pictured), to compete in the upcoming European Championships in Ankara later this month, it has been announced.


As well as Campbell, the team, which is likely to be similar to the one that lines up at the London 2012 Olympics, features three European Championship medallists - Khalid Yafai and Tom Stalker, claimed silver at the 2010 competition in Moscow, while Andrew Selby took bronze in the Russian capital.

The team for the event in the Turkish capital between June 15 and 25 contains two Welsh and two Scottish boxers, including recently crowned Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games bantamweight champion Sean McGoldrick and Scotland's Commonwealth Games silver medallist Josh Taylor.

Another Commonwealth Games silver medallist is in the squad in the form of England's Anthony Ogogo (pictured), a former contestant on the Big Brother television programme, while 18-year-old Charlie Edwards from Croydon, the latest addition to the Podium Squad after recently joining from the Development Squad, will get his first taste of top level international boxing at a major tournament.

GB Boxing performance director Rob McCracken told insidethegames: "The GB Boxing squad has been in fantastic form this year and we hope to continue our success at the European Championships in Turkey.

"This event will provide a fantastic marker ahead of the World Championships later this year as well as the London 2012 Olympics next year and with places up for grabs for those two events, we expect all the boxers to perform at their best in Turkey to help secure their place at the Games next year."

This year GB boxers have already claimed with 26 medals and won in seven elite International tournaments against some of the world's top boxing nations, including Russia, Ukraine, Cuba, Turkey, Poland, and France.

That medal tally includes nine golds, four silvers and 13 bronze medals in the seven tournaments held so far this year.

Great Britain's Podium squad warmed-up for the forthcoming European Championships with a five-medal haul in the finals of the Algirdas Sociksa tournament in Lithuania.

It was there that bantamweight Campbell from Hull claimed his third gold of the year with a convincing 11-7 victory over Dennis Ceylan of Denmark.

Lightweight star Martin Ward also won gold with an 11-4 destruction of Armenian Garnik Haratyunan while light-welterweight Stalker and middleweight Ogogo earned bronze medals and a place in the European Championship squad.
