Marble_ArchApril 7 - An ice rink will appear in the heart of London during the 2012 Games, Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics organisers have announced.

A rink is to be installed in front of Marble Arch in central London at the entrace of Hyde Park.

Sochi 2014 Organising Committee president and chief executive Dmitry Chernyshenko said that visitors to the Sochi World attraction will "come to the winter during the hot summer".

Ticket sales will pay for the 1,000-capacity facility, which also will feature a pavilion with cultural activities.

The ice-rink will highlight sporting performance.

Russian figure-skating stars will give master classes for young skaters while British figure-skaters will be invited to take part in the Sochi World ice-shows.

"The public activities will run under the name of Sochi World and will focus on master-classes and spectacular shows on an ice-rink," said Chernyshenko.

"The aim will be to present a new feature of the Sochi Games by reflecting the many different aspects of Russian culture across all its regions."

Alongside the ice-rink arena, Sochi World will include an interactive visitor experience and a hospitality pavilion, housed in custom-designed structures which will reflect the prestige of the Marble Arch site.

The Sochi World concept has received the support of London 2012 but final planning permission is still needed from Westminster City Council.

Sochi World will have its own English and Russian language website with a direct link to the official Sochi 2014 web-site.

"We are delighted to have this opportunity to share the best of Russian culture with the rest of the world," said Chernyshenko.

Marble Arch was originally erected on The Mall as a gateway to the new Buckingham Palace in 1828, which was rebuilt by John Nash from the former Buckingham House.

"We are grateful to Westminster City Council, with whom we will be developing further programmes of social engagement for children at Sochi World and a long-lasting legacy, and to LOCOG for their support in helping us to realise our goal."
