Newly re-elected president of the Spanish Basketball Federation (FEB) Elisa Aguilar confirmed that national team coaches Sergio Scariolo and Miguel Méndez, of the men's and women's sides, respectively, will extend their contracts until 2028.

Aguilar, who has been serving as the federation's president since last Fall, was re-elected on Tuesday and her first official measure since reclaiming office was the renewal of both coaches' contracts. The Italian-born Scariolo has led the men’s team in different stints (from 2009 to 2012 and from 2015 until now).

Besides the Spanish national team, he has also coached several first-rate clubs worldwide, including Real Madrid, Khimki BC, Olimpia Milano and the NBA's Toronto Raptors. He won silver at the London 2021 Olympics and bronze at Rio 2016, as well as a gold medal at the World Cup in China in 2019, and collected five other medals in Europe with Spain, mostly coaching a generational squad with all-time basketball greats like Pau and Marc Gasol, Juan Carlos Navarro, Ricky Rubio or Rudy Fernandez.

Méndez has managed Spain's women’s team since 2021. After Lucas Mondelo's exit, he lead the squad to a runner-up spot at the 2023 Eurobasket, where the Spaniards lost to Belgium in the final, and recently secured its ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympics in Sopron, Hungary.

"I want to announce right now the renewals of Sergio Scariolo and Miguel Méndez; it is a reality that they will continue with us until 2028," Aguilar stated, as she valued the "generational change" carried out by both in recent years and emphasized the need to balance continuity with renewal, in order to keeping a highly competitive level in international competition. "They both coach at a very high level. They align with our core values, are key to our growth and a guarantee for our future so we can keep winning and having more success," she said.

Despite his decorated tenure as the men's side coach, Scariolo has yet to seal the deal when it comes to Paris 2024, as Spain is still in peril of missing our on the Games. In order to qualify, the national team must play in a pre-Olympic tournament, to be hosted by the Spanish coastal city of Valencia from 2-7 July. The women's side got the job done back in the February qualifiers.

In October, Aguilar became the first woman president to take office in the Spanish federation, replacing former international and NBA player Jorge Garbajosa, who sat at the helm for the previous 16 years. She then resigned on 3 May hoping for re-election as Spain’s basketball boss and effectively got her wish without even having to compete in the process, as she encountered no opposition.

The FEB reported that it closed the 2022 financial year with a 17% increase in income, up to €14.4 million. Despite the increase in turnover, the federation saw its profit for the year fall significantly, from €542,663 in 2021 to almost €20,000 in 2022. The FEB's two main sources of income were advertising and the organisation of sporting activities, which brought in €5.8 million and €3.6 million respectively.
