Emirati fighter Zayed Al Kathiri enjoyed home success at the final leg of the 2022-2023 Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Ju-Jitsu World Tour season, in the city which gives the circuit its name.

The World Professional Ju-Jitsu Championship winner was favourite in the 56 kilograms division and duly delivered with gold at Abu Dhabi's Mubadala Arena to clinch the overall title in his weight category.

Abu Dhabi is considered as the "capital" of ju-jitsu with the city part of the name of the World Tour which has already visited Rio de Janeiro, Miami, Sydney and London this season.

"I am very happy on a personal level with this achievement," said Al Kathiri. 

"I am thrilled to have raised my country's flag on the podium. 

"I dedicate this achievement to my loyal fans, coaching staff and the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation, which paves the way for the players of the UAE to progress and rise."

Another home winner was Khaled Mohammed Al Shehhi at 62kg.

"I, like everyone else, aspire to achieve the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam title, especially since it is the final round of the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam championship series, and its points count towards the Abu Dhabi World Jiu-Jitsu Award at the end of the year," he said. 

"I am grateful to everyone who has supported me in my career to reach this accomplishment."

Other overall men's champions crowned included Brazilians Leonardo Mario, Meyran Alves and Lucas Protasio at 62kg, 69kg and 77kg respectively.

Jansen Ramos at 85kg, Catriel Fernandes at 94kg and Yatan Bueno at 120kg were other champions from Brazil.

Brazil also did well in women's events with Diana Teixeira at 49kg, Ana Rodriguez at 55kg, Julia Alves at 62kg, Izadora Silva at 70kg and Gabrieli Pessanha at 95kg all winning overall titles.

Commando Group were named as the top club in the professional category.
