Both will work with director of swimming Ian Quinn to select and coach the squad for the postponed Games, set to take place in the Chinese city from July 28 to August 8.

USA Swimming will not be involved in the selection process with the United States International University Sports Federation taking responsibility instead.

"We are thrilled that Peter and Jacy have taken on these roles as our head coaches for Chengdu," said Neal Holden, deputy head of delegation for USA World University Games.

"They both bring a wealth of knowledge and experience about the sport and are hungry for and appreciative of this opportunity to continue the strong tradition of American swimming at the World University Games.

"Our USA swimmers selected for Chengdu will be in great hands, and the team they will assemble will make us all proud!"

Richardson's selection comes off the back of his first season as associate head coach to the men's and women's teams at the University of Southern California.

Previously he had spent three seasons as the associate head coach at the University of Arizona.

"I couldn't be more excited about building the best team we can," Richardson said.

"Coaching the red, white, and blue at the World University Games this summer is an incredible opportunity to showcase the amazing talent we have here."

Dyer is the reigning Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) coach of the year for her work as head coach at Fairfield University.

The women's team captured the MAAC title while the men's squad came fourth.

"I am so honoured for this opportunity to be the women's head coach for our USA Team," Dyer said.

"We are excited about the student-athletes we have representing the United States so far and are currently looking for more swimmers who want to be a part of the team we are building.

"This is an incredible opportunity and we can't wait to represent our country well on an international stage at the World University Games."

Chengdu 2021 was originally due to take place two years ago but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and a clash of dates with the re-arranged 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
