The United States have begun the Pan-American Wrestling Championships with four gold medals from a possible six after the first day of Greco-Roman action in Buenos Aires.

There were initially seven weight categories scheduled to take place but no entries were registered in the under-63-kilograms contest.

In the under-55kg event, American Dalton Duffield took the gold medal in a round-robin tournament at Tecnopolis in the Argentine capital.

The 26-year-old beat both Axel Rolon of Argentina and Mexican Jose Rodriguez Hernandez, who took silver, without conceding a point as he recorded respective scorelines of 9-0 and 4-0.

Dalton Roberts then added a second title for the US in the under-60kg final against Ecuadorian Jeremy Peralta Gonzalez.

He opened the scoring with a step out for a 1-0 lead before pulling off a takedown which immediately led to a trapped-arm gut to end the bout.

Cuba's Kevin de Armas Rodriguez and Raiber Rodriguez Orozco of Venezuela secured the bronze medals.

For gold in the under-72kg event, Justus Scott of the US outlasted Kennedy Moraes Pedrosa of Brazil while Guatemalan Jose Varela Garcia beat Peru's Jesus Guzman Davila 3-1 for bronze.

In the final, the score was level at 1-1 at the break before Scott took a pair of turns on his way to a 6-2 triumph.

Scott's compatriot Josef Rau took victory by injury default in the under-97kg final after defending champion Kevin Mejia Castillo of Honduras was forced to retire.

The win marked Rau's third continental title after wins in 2015 and 2020.

Brazilian Igor Alves de Queiroz and Dominican Republic's Carlos Adames Palmer both took dominant 9-0 wins to claim bronze.

There were also injury defaults in the under-67kg and under-130kg events with Cuba benefitting in both.

Tokyo 2020 champion Luis Orta Sanchez also won his third Pan American gold as he ended up on top in the under-67kg event while triple world medallist Oscar Pino Hinds collected his fifth continental title in the under-130kg category.

Orta Sanchez was joined on the podium by Colombian Julian Horta Acevedo and Ecuador's Andres Montana Arroyo before Chilean Yasmani Acosta Fernandez and Brazil's Eduard Soghomonyan won under-130kg bronze.
