Germany’s Jessica von Bredow-Werndl, riding TSF Dalera BB, successfully defended the Dressage World Cup title in winning the deciding Freestyle competition at the 2023 series International Equestrian Federation (FEI) World Cup Final in Omaha.

The Olympic gold medallist and European champion pairing had arrived as favourites and won the opening grand prix section of the dressage competition, despite being put off as they entered the CHI Health Center Omaha Arena by the ringing of a bell above their heads.

Normal service was resumed in the final part  with a winning score of 90.482 per cent.

It was a glorious return for 37-year-old from Rosenheim, who gave birth to her second child, daughter Ella Marie, last August.

Denmark’s Nanna Skodborg Merrald and Blue Horse Zepter, who had finished third in the grand prix section behind Germany’s seven-time Olympic gold medallist Isabell Werth, produced a spectacular performance to take silver with a final score of 87.146 per cent.

Werth, 53, riding DSP Qantaz, had to settle for the bronze medal on this occasion with a total of 85.761 per cent.

"She was incredible, she went in with no wet hair [sweat] because I didn’t do a lot outside, but she was so wet because of the atmosphere," von Bredow-Werndl said about TSF Dalera BB.

"It was really hot in there and she again was a little bit scared but she trusted me 100 per cent, that was the difference tonight.

"I was confident and we were mirroring each other, she was confident and I got confident.

"She was excited but she trusted me from the very first step.

"Dalera is such a special creature to have in my life. She makes everything possible - she is a dream!"

Home rider Steffen Peters was second-last to go and moved to third place behind Werth with a mark of 83.921 per cent.

But a terrific performance from Skodborg Merrald and Blue Hors Zepter as last to run shifted Werth and Peters down by one place,

The results has brought Germany level with The Netherlands on 13 wins each in the Dressage World Cup, which in 2023 is celebrating its 36th anniversary.

Werth has won the title five times, while Dutch rider Anky van Grunsven earned the title a record nine.

The FEI World Cup Final is due to conclude tomorrow with the vaulting and jumping events.
