Russia's Olympic ice hockey gold medal-winning goalkeeper Vasily Koshechkin has announced his retirement.

He was a key member of the Olympic Athletes from Russia (OAR) team that triumphed at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang when they beat Germany 4-3 in the final.

Koshechkin kept two clean sheets during the competition, including when the OAR beat the United States 4-0 in the group stage and in the 3-0 semi-final victory over the Czech Republic.

He also won a gold medal at the 2009 World Championships, when Russia beat Canada 2-1 in the final in Bern.

Koshechkin, who turned 40 on Tuesday (March 27), finished his career with a full set of World Championship medals having also been in the Russia team that won silver in Germany in 2010 and bronze in Moscow in 2007.

Koshechkin revealed that the toll of playing so many matches had taken its toll and he had decided to retire after his club Metallurg Magnitogorsk had reached the second round of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) playoffs.

"A year ago, after signing the contract, I already knew that this season would be the last in my career," he told the Sport-Express newspaper.

"It was an important and very interesting period in my life.

"I have always enjoyed hockey, but my physical condition no longer allows a large number of matches in the season.

"It's time."

Although Koshechkin was drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2002 National Hockey League Entry Draft, he spent his entire career in the KHL.
