Ragne Wiklund of Norway delivered against home favourite Irene Schouten to win the women’s 3,000 metres gold at the International Skating Union (ISU) World Single Distance Championships in Heerenveen.

Schouten finished second while the bronze medal went to Martina Sáblíková of the Czech Republic.

Wiklund crossed the line in 3min 56.86sec ahead of three-time Olympic champion Schouten who managed to clock 3:57.40.

Meanwhile, Sáblíková finished third 1.49 seconds after the leader.

"I knew it was possible, but I knew I had to skate really well too, so I didn’t take anything for granted," Wiklund  said.

"I guess that last time (her first 1500m title in 2021), I felt like… not that I didn't deserve it, but it was more like how did I get up here?  Now it feels more as a confirmation.

"I’m confident in this track and I have only good experiences here, also with the audience."

Earlier, Patrick Roest won the 100th world gold medal for the Netherlands as he won the men’s 5,000m in 6:08.94.

Italy’s Davide Ghiotto and Bart Swings of Belgium won silver and bronze in 6:11.12 and 6:11.12 respectively.

Meanwhile, the team titles of the day went to Canada.

Brooklyn McDougall, Carolina Hiller and Ivanie Blondin won the women’s title in 1:26.29 as McKenzie Browne, Erin Jackson and Kimi Goetz of The United States won silver 0.29sec later.

Bronze went to the Chinese trio of Zhang Lina, Jin Jingzhu and Li Qishi in 1:27.86.

Moments later, Christopher Fiola, Antoine Gélinas-Beaulieu and Laurent Dubreuil won the men’s sprint tile for Canada in 1:19.26.

Silver went to Merijn Scheperkamp, Hein Otterspeer and Wesly Dijs of The Netherlands in 1:19.67.

Norway completed the podium thanks to Bjørn Magnussen, Henrik Fagerli Rukke and Haavard Lorentzen, who clocked 1:19.80.
