Li Sun has been named as head coach of the Chinese national table tennis team following a three-day selection process as preparations increase for next year's Olympic Games in Paris.

The 59-year-old has trained Grand Slam winners Wang Nan, Zhang Yining and Li Xiaoxia during his career and has led the country's women's squad since 2017.

"The coach selection and communication activity over the past three days offers an opportunity for coaches across the country to exchange ideas," Li said, as reported by China's official state news agency Xinhua

"Through this we can truly recruit and develop talents, and make Chinese table tennis prosper for the long term."

World champion Wang Hao was also appointed as men's head coach, while triple Olympic champion Ma Lin will take charge of the women's team.

Veteran coach Xiao Zhan is set to lead the mixed doubles pairings.

A total of 31 coaches participated in the event with 24 being offered roles as a result.

"The Chinese Table Tennis Association (CTTA) organised this coach selection and communication activity with the aim of preparing for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games," said CTTA President Liu Guoliang.

"Those coaches applied for positions and learned from each other as well.

"Sharing knowledge is the biggest treasure of the Chinese table tennis team."

In addition to the coach appointments, the national trials took place in Beijing to determine the athletes due to compete for China in the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) World Championships in Durban, due to take place from May 20 until May 28.

Tokyo 2020 women's singles runner-up Sun Yingsha dominated the discipline in the domestic event, while five-time Olympic champion Ma Long was then victorious in the men's singles tournament.

"I prepared really well for the tryout and I delivered a great performance and managed to maintain my concentration all through the match although I didn't expect a 3-0 result," said Ma, as reported by China Daily.

"Playing against players like Fan Zhendong, any small mistake can cost you the match even if you have the lead."

China once again dominated table tennis at Tokyo 2020 with four golds out of a possible five.

It took their gold medal tally to 32 out of a possible 37 since the sport was included on the Olympic programme at Seoul 1988.

They are gunning for a clean sweep in the French capital with specific teams enlisted to coordinate training for mixed doubles, which was one by Japan at their home Olympics.

China won all the Olympic gold medals at Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000, Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016 when there were only four events on the programme.

"We all realise the importance of the mixed doubles, and we need to try our best to win Olympic gold," said Li.

"Now the men's team and the women's team are cooperating well, and we have appointed specific crews to coordinate the training of the mixed doubles pairs.

"For example, we have arranged more training time for the mixed doubles players.

"Compared with our preparations for the Tokyo Olympics, we have more comprehensive methods, stronger players and, crucially, have put these plans in motion earlier than before."
