Sofia Goggia became the first Italian woman to win 22 International Ski and Snowboard Federation Alpine Skiing World Cup races after triumphing in the event at Crans-Montana.

Goggia was level with Federica Brignone on 21 Alpine Skiing World Cup race wins and the pair did battle in a downhill race rescheduled from yesterday, after fog followed by dangerous slope conditions meant racing could not take place.

Racing was delayed by 37 minutes today due to a fog, but once the action did get underway it was Goggia who came out on top in a thrilling battle as she took the win in 1min 26.81sec.

Racing after her compatriot Brignone led through the mid-section of the course but ended up finishing 0.15sec behind Goggia in 1:26.96.

The podium was completed by France’s Laura Gauche in 1:27.22, 0.41 behind the race winner, who claimed her first ever World Cup podium in any discipline.

Goggia’s victory came in spite of her crashing in the only training run at the course on Friday (February 24).

It means she now has a fifth win in seven World Cup downhill races this season and a 17th in her career.

It comes after she was disqualified in the downhill event at the World Championships in Courchevel-Meribel earlier this month after straddling a gate.

Brignone’s second place means she continues her wait for a World Cup downhill victory, but she did secure a 54th World Cup podium across all disciplines.

In the race for the overall downhill World Cup globe Goggia holds a 179-point advantage over Ilka Stuhec of Slovenia, who finished ninth on the day.

Women’s Alpine Skiing World Cup action is scheduled to continue at Kvitfjell in Norway, with two super-G and one downhill race set to take place between March 3 and 5.
