Birmingham 2022 b-boy breaking gold medallist Victor Montalvo has been named the first World Games athlete of the month for 2023.

Montalvo's achievements towards the end of last year earned him the honour for January.

Competing for the United States under the name Victor, he won the Red Bull BC World One competition held in New York City in November, becoming one of only five breakers to triumph more than once at the prestigious event.

The 2021 world champion had earlier taken bronze at the World DanceSport Federation World Breaking Championships in Seoul in October.

Montalvo beat compatriot Jeffrey Louis 3-1 in the b-boy final at last year's World Games to take gold.

He is the first breaker to win the International World Games Association's athlete of the month prize since Russian Sergey Chernyshev in October 2020.

Montalvo is likely to represent the US in men's breaking at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The sport is set to make its debut at the Games after it was proposed as an additional sport along with skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing.

The other three sports featured for the first time at Tokyo 2020 and made the core programme for Los Angeles 2028.

Breaking is one of nine sports shortlisted to feature as an additional sport again at the Games in five years' time.

Competition in breaking is set to be held at a temporary arena on the iconic Place de la Concorde at Paris 2024, which is also the planned venue for BMX freestyle, skateboarding and 3x3 basketball.

The World Games is a multi-sport event for sports and disciplines not contested at the Olympics, and its 12th edition is due to be held in the Chinese city of Chengdu in 2025.
